Subject: [MDBirding] Riley's Lock & hughes Hollow

Very few birds on the river or on Seneca Creek this morning (~8:30): only a single Horned Grebe, one Pied-billed Grebe, a Double-crested Cormorant and 2 Great blue Herons nearby. Two Phoebes were vocal, as were Song Sparrows.

Went then to Hughes Hollow which I enjoyed despite occasional showers. Most interesting were BLUE-WINGED TEALS, at least a dozen but skittish and often on the move, hidden in the large marsh on the right after the cross-dike; one REDHEAD pair in the large group of Wigeons, Ring-necked ducks, Coots, and Hooded Mergansers in the main impoundment on the left, near and behind the island; active SWAMP SPARROWs near the dike, and one BARN SWALLOW with the many TREE SWALLOWs. Finally, just as the sun made a very brief and timid appearance, ~30 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS arrived, perched as briefly on three trees near the cross dike, and left.

I posted some photos (end of the gallery: http://tweetweet.smugmug.com/Nature/Birds/2013/27416024_ckBBLc) and below is my eBird list.
