Spent a couple of hours shooting Les's Rufous on Saturday March 30, from about 1pm to 3pm. Thanks Les, for the hospitality!
The Rufous fed every 30 minutes or so. Compared to the Anna's in Newark that I photographed the same day, I thought the Rufous was not as persistent in its feeding, about 30 seconds or less, and sometimes not long enough to get on it and get a shot. The Anna's fed for a full 30-60 seconds at a time, where the Rufous was very variable and generally much shorter in duration. We also had good views of a Pine Warbler busy catching insects on the ground (see photos). Many Pine Siskins at Les's feeders.
The Rufous may not have been as tolerant of camera flash as The Anna's, which only looked up from feeding until it got accustomed to that and thereafter ignored it. That may have affected my observation. Since I generally use flash on small birds and in particular Hummingbirds, it is a behavior characteristic of interest to me :-(.
