Thanks, Tyler. Well said.

Yes, PLEASE, PLEASE try to photograph any Eastern Wood-Pewee - or any Empidonax flycatcher (e.g., Acadian, Least) - reported before 4/25.

As we note each year, early arrivals are often highly noteworthy and can be much more rare than traditional state "rarities". A documented Eastern Wood-Pewee today would be far rarer than a Franklin's Gull or Yellow-headed Blackbird!

Good birding!

Bill

>I think that Matt Hafner would agree, as would the other MD eBird reviewers, that any Eastern Wood-Pewee reports, and especially thosesubmitted to eBird, prior to about April 22, would have to be documented by diagnostic photos. There are no reports of EAWP north of Mexico in 2013and since there are a lot of active eBird users in the southern tier states, it is highly improbable that any escaped detection. EAWP shows up like clockwork in MD in late April. Anything before then is almost assuredly something else.

>I know it is extremely rare for a Pewee this time of year, but I have had some recent conversations with Matt Haffner about my own Pewee observations recently. I am very aware of what mimics a Pewee and have not seen any signs of those birds, as I have heard one at work (Arlington Echo Outdoor Ed Center, Millersville) twice in the past few weeks. I also caught a glimpse of a Pewee on Wed of last week in the Glendening Preserve down by Jug Bay. Unfortunately, I have no photographic or sound recorded proof at this moment. I told Matt I will see what I can do to possibly photo the one at work. Again, I've been very skeptical as well, until I saw the one last week.
