Last evening while out counting Woodcock at Patuxent's North Tract, came across our first Whip-poor-will of the season. The high winds kept the activity of Woodcock down as we only found 1 bird. Found the Whip-poor-will singing just off of Bald Eagle Drive while leaving the refuge as I stopped to checkout a few vernal pools for frogs. Found 2 of them last year on the 2nd of April. So not a complete suprise. Fun night out, even in the wind.
