Subject: [MDBirding] Leucistic Red-tailed Hawk, Red-headed Woodpecker-Charles Co.
Hi all,

I did some birding in Charles Co. yesterday and happened upon a beautiful leucistic Red-tailed Hawk along Riverside Rd. in the Nanjemoy area at 1:45 PM. I saw something big and white coast across the road ahead of me below the tree line. As I approached the open area of swamp on the east side of the road, I caught a glimpse of the bird perched. He took off as soon as my car slowed, but I managed a couple shots out the window as he blasted off. There was also at least one adult Red-headed Woodpecker in the same spot. The hawk disappeared, circling eastbound over the trees. I stopped back later in the afternoon...couldn't relocate him, but the woodpecker was still in the same area. My eBird marker is on the exact location. The google maps GPS coordinates are 38 23.289, -077 13.919. I also had a Royal Tern flying along the Potomac at the Rte. 6 (Port Tobacco Rd.) terminus, and a Caspian Tern on one of the piers at Smallwood State Park. It was a great day to be out and about. Here's the link to the eBird report for the hawk and woodpecker: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S13606320 .
