Subject: [MDBirding] Peregrine in downtown Silver Spring!
I've been hearing about Peregrine sightings here for several years--finally saw one myself! I was coming along Spring St. and just before Colesville, saw what I was sure (for all purposes except putting it on my Montgomery Co. list; we all know that kind of "it's got to be--but I need a better look to be REALLY sure" sort of feeling) was one of the peregrines. Blessedly the light turned red, giving me a chance to look, and then decide to find a parking place. Another blessing--less than a block down Colesville was a parking spot with time left on the meter.

I spotted the bird on top of the Doubletree's openwork tower, then it flew across the street to the Homewood Suites--from the tree to the wood duck, looking at the buildings' logos--but vanished over the roof line. I waited a few minutes and it came to what seems to be a ledge just below the top edge of the roof, and started making feathers fly! It apparently had caught a pigeon (judging from the feathers drifting everywhere).

Now I'm not surprised I haven't seen it before, because unless you see it flying and know it's there and wait and really look, it can easily disappear. Wonder if there's going to be a nest?! Has there been in the past?

Very exciting bird to see!
