Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from March 29, 2013
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island. The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, March 2013, Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
Wintering waterfowl have largely departed the project site while activity of historical nesting species is rapidly increasing. Canada Goose, Mallard, Osprey and Killdeer are already incubating clutches; Great Blue Heron, Horned Lark, Tree Swallow, European Starling and Red-winged Blackbird close behind; and Double-crested Cormorant and Herring Gull activity is heating up every day. North transient species Horned Grebe, Northern Gannet, Double-crested Cormorant and several species of sparrows also made a showing with the most notable being a Canvasback, American Kestrel, Mourning Dove and American Robin. This was only the second time for the latter two species to be found at the site.
