Subject: [MDBirding] first spring visit to Wheaton Park & Brookside Gardens
HI all,

Barry and I made our first spring visit to Wheaton Regional Park (WRP) and the adjacent Brookside Gardens and Nature Ctr. (Montgomery Co.) this morning. It was sunny, cold and a bit breezy. Activity was good considering the time of year, but things don't seem as far advanced (vegetation, especially) as the same date in 2012. We were pleased to see the Tree Swallows are back at Pine Lake; the only other spring visitor was a single Eastern Phoebe in WRP. We had a nice assortment of sparrows, including Fox and Field. Two Pied-bill Grebes and a female Ring-necked Duck joined the Mallards and Canada Geese on the lake, which was busy with fishermen as recently stocked with trout. Two pairs of Chickadees were investigating potential nesting holes and woodpeckers were drumming and calling. A nice early spring day --
