Subject: [MDBirding] some Fredericks birds, including pipits

Hi all,

Barry and I led a bird walk at the Bishop Claggett Center in conjunction with the groundbreaking this afternoon for their new conference center. It was sunny and warm but *very* windy so it was hard to find a sheltered spot. Nevertheless we did see a few birds of interest, including our FOS Brown Thrasher, Rough-winged Swallow and Chipping Sparrow. Other birds of interest: Osprey, Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, Eastern Phoebe and singing Field Sparrow.

Afterwards we checked out the intersection of Oland & Lilypons Rds. and Rt 85, finding 30+ American Pipits in the plowed field in the NE corner along with about 12 Horned Larks, and a single Eastern Meadowlark in the grassy field in the SW corner, as well as a Kestrel. Among about 30 Ring-billed Gulls in a nearby field were 6 Bonaparte's. Looking down over Lilypons from the road we saw a number of swallows hawking over the ponds, mostly Tree and Rough-winged but there were at least 3 FOS Barn Swallows as well. 4 Green-winged Teal were the only ducks of interest visible from the road. The Great Blue Heron rookery is active, several birds were flying in carrying large sticks.
