The winner of today's warbler competition at Susquehanna State Park is...Yellow-Throated (6). If you have average hearing and know the song, it's nearly a sure bet that you can find them on the other side of Deer Creek, mainly high up in the big sycamores as you drive and stop along Stafford Road. You can also find them (mainly the same ones) if you park at the little bridge at the river/Deer Creek confluence, cross the bridge, and walk the wildflower trail--you will have a better chance of getting other than a very distant view of them, as I did when 2 were chasing each other and came relatively close to the trail.

I was a little surprised when eBird alerted me that Spotted Sandpiper is "rare" for this place at this time. 2 of them did their short funny flights and walks along the river bank near the intersection of Stafford and Rock Run.

There were probably more Pines or Palms than I have below, but, at a particular spot, chippies, pines, and palms were all trilling variable stuff at the same time, and I ended up relying just on what I could see.

My first bird of the day was a LouWaterthrush, probably the one that Les Eastland found a couple of days ago. A good omen!

Best birds:

Yellow-Throated Warbler (6)
Palm Warbler (2 yellow)
Pine Warbler (3)
Yellow-Rumped Warbler (4)
Louisiana Waterthrush (5)
Wood Duck (2)
Osprey (3)
Bald Eagle (2)
Cooper's Hawk (1)
Spotted Sandpiper (2)
Brown Creeper (1)
Golden-Crowned Kinglet (8)
Ruby-Crowned Kinglet (6)
Brown Thrasher (1)

All good birding wishes,

Tim Houghton
