This evening I watched a Short-eared Owl fly out of the overgrown new impoundment at Swan Harbor Farm. I was looking for the Orange-crowned Warbler reported Sunday by Elaine Hendricks when the owl flushed from the impoundment, made a wide circle around me and headed toward the marshy impoundment where it was attacked by crows. I made a video with my phone through binoculars, but am still trying to edit that and will post it tomorrow. The owl got away from the crows and began to gain altitude toward the NE where I finally lost it as it approached the bay. This was only my 3rd Short-eared Owl ever for Harford!
I knew Josh Emm was on his way and tried to get a hold of him, but he was busy watching Yellow Palm Warblers on the drive in instead of looking at me frantically waving my arms and yelling to him.
Otherwise, the only shorebirds I saw were Killdeer and Snipe. Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal are still present as is a Lesser Scaup. Pied-billed Grebes are calling regular in both the new impoundments and the marshy impoundment. There are at least 2 males in the marshy impoundment. Josh and I flushed a lot of Savannah Sparrows along the cornfield edges, but failed to turn up a Vesper.
Before I left home, a Yellow Palm Warbler was hanging with the bluebirds along the road. A new yard bird!
Good birding!
