Lake Artemesia was very busy this morning with migrants. Ruby-crowned Kinglets were everywhere - Golden-crowned Kinglets a little less so. Yellow-rumped Warblers, in much brighter plumage than I've seen lately, were also present in good numbers. I "finally" saw my first-of-year Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. It's hard to believe that my first-of-year in 2012 was nearly three weeks earlier. Only seen in migration here, a Pine Warbler and Eastern Meadowlark were fun surprises.
I was also pleased to find a Blue-headed Vireo, which is my earliest record by a few days. Checking the eBird map, it's clear that this species has arrived in MD, but there's only been a few reports in PA and single reports in NJ and southern NY.
What a difference a week makes. In fact, it was less than a week ago that I counted 34 species at the lake, while today's total hit 56.
