Top bird this week is BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* in VA.
Other birds of interest include EURASIAN WIGEON, EURASIAN TEAL, RED-NECKED GREBE, ANHINGA, AMERICAN BITTERN, herons, ibis, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, rails, shorebirds, CASPIAN TERN, RAZORBILL, SHORT-EARED OWL, RUFOUS and ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS, EASTERN KINGBIRD, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, PURPLE MARTIN, swallows, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, VEERY, BROWN THRASHER, AMERICAN PIPIT, warblers, sparrows, PAINTED BUNTING, PURPLE FINCH, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, COMMON REDPOLL, and EVENING GROSBEAK.
A BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* continued to draw birders to Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA - though sometimes it made them wait a long time before putting in an appearance. The most recent report is from April 7.
On April 4 a EURASIAN WIGEON was found at Gordon's Pond, Rehoboth Beach, DE, and another along Flatland Rd, Kent Co, MD. On April 7 a EURASIAN WIGEON was reported from Deal Island WMA (the Riley Roberts Rd turnoff), Somerset Co, MD. A EURASIAN TEAL was spotted at Oxbow Lake, Anne Arundel Co, MD, April 2. As many as 4 REDHEADS have been frequenting the impoundments at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD, with reports through April 8.
A RED-NECKED GREBE put in an appearance on the Potomac River on April 5; it was seen from the C&O Canal between Violette's and Riley's Locks.
An ANHINGA was seen April 2 at Lake Wright in Virginia Beach, VA. An AMERICAN BITTERN has been kerplunking - and occasionally moving into view - at Hughes Hollow, with reports through April 8. On April 6, an AMERICAN BITTERN was found at Julie Metz Wetlands Bank, Prince William Co, VA.
A LITTLE BLUE HERON visited the SWM pond on Chesapeake Blvd in Elkton, Cecil Co, MD, on April 2.
On April 8, a LITTLE GREEN HERON ushered in Spring at Schoolhouse Pond, Upper Marlboro, Prince George's Co, MD, and at Hughes Hollow.
On April 5, 4 WHITE IBIS were found at Back Bay NWR, Virginia Beach. On April 8, a GLOSSY IBIS was reported from the Mattaponi Creek area of Merkle WMA in Prince George's Co, MD.
On April 7 the Cromwell Valley Park Hawkwatch, Baltimore Co, MD, welcomed the first BROAD-WINGED HAWK of the season.
Multiple KING RAILS graced Occoquan NWR, Woodbridge, Prince William Co, VA, on April 5. On April 6, 2 VIRGINIA RAILS were found at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA.
An AMERICAN AVOCET was a nice bonus for many of the birders seeking the Black-tailed Godwit at Chincoteague NWR.
On April 2, 8 PIPING PLOVERS were seen at the Point at Cape Henlopen SP, DE. On April 8, SPOTTED SANDPIPERS were spotted at Swan Creek Wetlands, Anne Arundel Co, MD, and in Cumberland, Allegany Co, MD. That same day a LEAST SANDPIPER was found from Rumbley Point Rd, Somerset Co, MD. Several PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were noted at Swan Harbor Farm Park, Harford Co, MD.
CASPIAN TERNS showed up at a variety of locations.
The bodies of several RAZORBILLS washed up along the shoreline in Virginia Beach on April 4.
On April 6 a SHORT-EARED OWL was seen at Middle Run Natural Area, New Castle Co, DE. On April 8 a SHORT-EARED OWL flew out of the marsh at Swan Harbor Farm Park.
The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Green Springs Garden Park, Fairfax Co, VA, was still visiting the feeders as of April 8, as was the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Amberley, Anne Arundel Co, MD. The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at Wilkinson Rd, Harford Co, MD, was last seen April 2. The ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD that wintered in Newark, DE, was seen again April 2 and 3.
Sure signs of Spring included EASTERN KINGBIRD, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, PURPLE MARTIN, 5 species of swallow, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, and BROWN THRASHER. On April 6, a VEERY was singing along Neabsco Rd, Prince William Co, VA.
Some 200 AMERICAN PIPITS flooded the fields near the Polo Grounds on Hughes Rd, Montgomery Co, on April 6 and 7.
Warblers are trickling in. A WORM-EATING WARBLER was a highlight of the weekly walk at Huntley Meadows on April 8. LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES are singing along the C&O Canal, Montgomery Co, MD. Two ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS visited Southwest Area Park in Baltimore, MD, on April 6 and 7. On April 8, Susquehanna SP, Harford Co, MD, hosted 6 YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS.
AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were observed at several locations, including Lilypons Water Gardens, Frederick Co, MD, April 2; Mt Pleasant Farm, Howard Co, April 4; and Cabin John RP, Montgomery Co, April 5. FOX SPARROWS were moving through (often singing). And over the weekend VESPER SPARROWS were reported from Kenilworth Park, NE DC; Harrison Rd in Fauquier Co, VA; Kinder Farm Park, Anne Arundel Co, MD; and Southwest Area Park, Baltimore Co.
A PAINTED BUNTING visited a feeder in Chesapeake, VA (south of Norfolk) on April 5 and 6.
PURPLE FINCHES and PINE SISKINS continue to visit area feeders.
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen April 4 and 6 at Resthaven Memorial Cemetery, Frederick Co, MD, on April 4 and 6, and at Fort Ritchie, Washington Co, MD. COMMON REDPOLLS visited a feeder in Baltimore April 6.
Four EVENING GROSBEAKS were observed at a feeder at Tormentor Lake, Isle of Wight Co, VA (NW of Norfolk) as recently as April 8.
