So, I pulled into our driveway 5ish this afternoon and a small bird flew up. When I got the bins on it, I could see a strongly black and white striped head, grey chest, and pinkish feet. I thought--White-crowned Sparrow? That's a first for our yard. But then it turned around and the back and wings were very striped looking with a definite yellowish green cast to them. Is that what White-crowns look like in breeding plumage? I normally only see them in midwinter.
The poor bird was really heat stressed, holding its wings well away from its body. I hope it found the bird bath.
Also had a couple of Chipping Sparrows, looking handsome with their rusty caps. Hairy Woodpeckers were having a dialogue and later I heard the neighborhood Mockingbird, who has been silent for months. Pat Valdata Elkton, MD
