Subject: [MDBirding] Parkview Trail Hawk Watch April 11, 2013
Hi All,
After a unsuccessful search for the Orange-crowned Warblers at South West Area Park this morning (got a FOY Ovenbird as consolation prize!), I spent the late morning and afternoon doing a hawk watch from our deck here in Parkview Trail, Windsor Mill. It was pretty slow going mid-day, but around 2:30PM it started revving up and several large kettles of Vultures, Ospreys, Eagles, Harriers, Hawks, and Falcons came up the Patapsco Valley to our west and turned NE past our house towards Windsor Mill/Randallstown. At 3:52PM, a adult-like Golden Eagle appeared over the Patapsco Valley and soared leisurely north while constantly being harassed by a group of Sharp-shinned Hawks! The flight finally came to a screeching halt around 5PM, at which point I had tallied 53 species and 285 raptors! Best non-raptor birds were Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Red-breasted Nuthatch, and a female Purple Finch.

Raptor count:

40 Black Vulture
68 Turkey Vulture
21 Osprey
1 Golden Eagle
13 Northern Harrier
29 Sharp-shinned Hawk
7 Cooper's Hawk
6 Bald Eagle
10 Red-shouldered Hawk
53 Broad-winged Hawk
10 Red-tailed Hawk
13 American Kestrel
14 Merlin

Good Birding!
