Hi everybody:
I did some predawn birding this morning at Hughes Hollow (McKee-Beshers WMA in Montgomery County). I arrived about 5:30 AM hoping to hear bitterns, rails, etc. I was standing on the cross dike at 5:52 AM when I heard a Whippoorwill calling near the parking lot. It called off and on for several minutes, then was silent. The last time I heard it was 5:58 AM. It sounded more distant like it had moved further down Hunting Quarter Rd. It was obviously migrating through and was totally unexpected. What a great way to start the day!
I also heard an American Bittern calling as well as one Sora. Just after daylight I heard Pied-billed Grebe(s) calling also.
