Subject: [MDBirding] Unusual yard bird!
I left the house a little after 11 this morning, and heard crows making a fuss about something up in the top of a pine tree. I could see a big brown bird and figured it was a the barred owl I've been hearing. Then a long snakey neck and bare head came down into view as the bird dodged the crows--it was a female wild turkey of all things! Yard bird #74--not bad for a mile from downtown Silver Spring! I thought it was a treat the time I saw one crossing Military in Rock Creek, but this seems way more unlikely than that, even tho I live next to Sligo Creek Park.

Her expression when I got to where I had a good view was priceless--she looked partly befuddled, and partly as if she was thinking "Do these hooligans really think I look like an owl??" Finally she took off, one crow in hot pursuit. I don't think I've ever seen a turkey fly that high--well above the two story roofs of our townhouses--and never realized they were such strong fliers.
