I went birding along Mellwood Rd in Prince Georges Co. today. Nice looks at a couple of Palm Warbler, and a lovely day for a walk in the country, but no unusual birds. What was unusual were the slew of signs announcing Upper Marlboro Planning Board meetings, one for April 18 and one for 5-9-13. The signs said to call 301-699-CALL for more information; some gave reference number SDP 1205 and others said SDP 12043. I think the latter were closer to Pennsylvania Ave. and the 1205 signs up by the closed off road that lets you walk thru the fields.
Anyway, I google the sdp numbers and then Smith Home Farm Upper Marlboro, based on what I had found. I didn't locate the boundaries, but there's a huge development called Westphalia being planned for the area. Does anyone know any more about it? Looks as if we may not have long to enjoy the fields here, unless there's still a way to get them to preserve some open space. Or maybe it doesn't include all of Mellwood; I couldn't tell in the amount of time I had for research, but thought I'd share what I found so far.
