Top bird this week is BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* in VA.
Other birds of interest include migrants, ROSS'S GOOSE, EURASIAN WIGEON, COMMON EIDER, ANHINGA, WHITE-FACED IBIS, SWALLOW-TAILED KITE, GOLDEN EAGLE, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, LITTLE GULL, ROSEATE TERN, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and RED CROSSBILL.
A BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* continued at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA. The most recent report is from Apr 14.
Spring migration reports continue to increase. This past week had many reports of arrivals such as GREEN HERON, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, CHIMNEY SWIFT, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, EASTERN KINGBIRD, HOUSE WREN, WORM-EATING WARBLER, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH. There were scattered reports of GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, WOOD THRUSH, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE. And there were still many observations of wintering birds that will soon head farther north including waterfowl, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and PURPLE FINCH.
A ROSS'S GOOSE was seen on Apr 15 at the Crownsville Containment Ponds, Anne Arundel Co, MD. A EURASIAN WIGEON was found at Deal Island WMA (the Riley Roberts Rd turnoff), Somerset Co, MD on Apr 11. Five female COMMON EIDERS flew by the Ocean City Inlet, Worcester Co, MD on Apr 12. A COMMON EIDER was seen at the Point in Cape Henlopen SP, Sussex Co, DE on Apr 14.
An ANHINGA was observed flying over McMillan Reservoir, Washington, DC on Apr 14. A flock of Glossy Ibis on South Point Rd, Worcester Co, MD had a WHITE-FACED IBIS and a probable WHITE-FACED and GLOSSY hybrid on Apr 12. A WHITE-FACED IBIS was seen near Basket Switch RD and Rt 113 in Worcester Co on Apr 15.
A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen over North Point SP, Baltimore Co, MD on Apr 13. Two adult GOLDEN EAGLES soared above Accotink Bay, Fairfax Co, VA on Apr 10 and another was seen over the Patapsco Valley in MD on Apr 11.
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were found at Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co, DE this week. An adult LITTLE GULL was seen from Diamond Point, Back River, Baltimore Co, MD on Apr 10. Another adult LITTLE GULL was near Cox's Point Park on the Back River on Apr 15. A ROSEATE TERN was at Truitt's Landing, Worcester Co, MD on Apr 10.
The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Green Springs Garden Park, Fairfax Co, VA, was still visiting the feeders as of Apr 15, as was the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Amberley, Anne Arundel Co, MD.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen in Southwest Area Park in Baltimore, MD, on Apr 10 and 14.
An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was observed at the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary Visitor Center, Prince Georges Co, MD on Apr 14 and at Finzel Swamp, Garrett Co, MD on Apr 14. A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was seen in Kenilworth Park, Washington, DC on Apr 13. VESPER SPARROWS were found in several locations including Patterson Park, Baltimore, MD; Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co, VA; Westerly Rd, Montgomery Co, MD; Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Prince Georges Co, MD; Cabin Run Rd and Rt 36, Allegany Co, MD; Sandy Point SP, Anne Arundel Co, MD; and McMillan Reservoir, Washington, DC.
A very notable flock of at least 120 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS was encountered at Hughes Hollow in McKee-Beshers WMA, Montgomery Co, MD on Apr 15.
The great movement of crossbills into our area this winter has finally abated, but eight RED CROSSBILLS were seen in Ellendale, Sussex Co, DE on Apr 13.
