Neil,
Thank you for your response! I'm just lucky you my email. Yes, we had them much more frequently in the past, but not everyday like we get the Flicker, Downy, and Red-bellied.

Coincidentally Ive been watching my own backyard regularly since March 16. On April 8 I saw my first Hairy, and now 2. Its absence was conspicuous. My own sense is that they have generally been much scarcer the past few years overall in my own backyard. Before that I always saw one or two whenever I looked.

Subject: [MDBirding] Hairy Woodpecker in Silver Spring

Today we had a male Hairy Woodpecker at our suet feeder. We used to see him more frequently in other years. But one day last week and today are the first times I've seen him all year. I don't notice many listings for "Hairy Woodpeckers" on birders lists for what they have seen on their walks. Are they down in numbers or are birders recording just more interesting birds in their lists?
