Re the Parulas, I forgot to mention that most of the singing featured what I think of as the 2nd song--not that clear rising trill of notes with the distinct final note at the end that so many of us think of first. But maybe what I call its 2nd song is really its first. In any case, it's the less known song. When I'm out with groups, the "2nd" sometimes confuses people. OK, enough with the parula; pretty soon we'll be getting tired of it! (But what a beautiful bird if you can find a close male.) TH

Subject: [MDBirding] 8 warbler species, Susquehanna State Park

Well, the Parulas have already begun to assert their dominance at Susquehanna State Park. I had 15 today, and there were plenty more, certainly, out there. Predictably this was an eBird "High Count," but Susquehanna isn't a typical location, and a high number for, especially, Parulas isn't surprising here. I saw a Black-and-White with a flock of Pines and Yellow Rumps. I picked it out b/c of its unique behavior (walking on branches). Still no Prothonotary--I checked many good spots--and no Ovenbirds.

Warblers today:

Black-and-White Warbler (1)
Louisiana Waterthrush (6)
Common Yellowthroat (3)
Palm Warbler (2, yellow)
Pine Warbler (3)
Yellow-Rumped Warbler (55)
Northern Parula (15)
Yellow-Throated Warbler (5)

And some non-warblers: House Wren, Merlin, White-Eyed Vireo.

I was out there less than 4 hours--and felt rushed. I wish I could have stayed 6 or 7.

All good birding wishes,

Tim Houghton
