Kevin Graff, Leslie Starr and Joe Turner were already present when I arrived and we hiked the Blackmarsh trail together for a while until the rain got too intense and we walked back to the cars and went our separate ways. Despite the drizzle and cloudy conditions early in the morning, persistence paid off and the weather eventually cleared and the birds and herps got very active. Between the hours of 8AM-3PM I tallied an impressive 92 species, including many new yearbirds: Black-and-White Warbler, Northern Waterthrush, Prothonotary Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo, Bank Swallow, Eastern Kingbird, and an American Bittern! In the marsh I also heard many Virginia Rails, a Sora, Least Bittern, and several Marsh Wrens. As the sun came out in the afternoon the herps got very active and the marsh trail was literally crawling with snakes, mostly Northern Watersnakes and Eastern Ribbon Snakes. A good number of Mud Turtles were also out and about.
