MBP and Banding Codes

Many birders use bird banding codes constantly in notebooks, text messages, and to quickly enter data in eBird. Those
unfamiliar with them can be perplexed when they see them in e-mail
subject lines. Well, whether you're looking for an easyway to look up banding codes or a power user who likes to type as
little as possible, Maryland Biodiversity Project now supports banding
codes in our search area (top-right corner). You can type "AMRO",
"CEDW", or "BTNW" and jump quickly to American Robin, Cedar Waxwing, or
Black-throated Green Warbler. You can also go to those pages normally
and then look up their codes in the Synonyms section at the top of the
page. This should be a handy resource. Please spread the word! Here's a
photo of a beautiful CERW (Cerulean Warbler) from Carroll Co. Why CERW
instead of CEWA? It conflicts with Cedar Waxwing, so both codes are
adjusted. Enjoy! - Bill http://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=1259

MBP and Synonyms

Whistle-Pig, Stinkpot, Oldsquaw, Marsh Hawk,
Spicebush, Blue Scorpion Grass, Louisiana Heron, Jesuit's Bark... none
of these are common names registered at Maryland Biodiversity Project.
They ARE synonyms you can read once you find your wayto those species pages. But what if you know a species only by its
synonym? MBP now lets you use the search box in the top-right corner to
search by any of our synonyms. You can type Box Elder or Boxelder. You
can find Orange Sulphur or Orange Sulfur. You can find out what a
Whistle-Pig is. You can see more photos of Golden Swamp Warblers like
this one from Jon Corcoran! (http://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=1247) Try it out and let us know what other synonyms we should add!

Since posting the above message about synonyms, Bob Ringler has shared an excellent reference on MD bird synonyms, which I'll be mining over the coming days to enrich the hundreds of synonyms already provided.

Good birding!

Bill
