This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, April 23, at about 10 AM.
Top birds this week are (COMMON or EURASIAN) GREEN-WINGED TEAL and SWALLOW-TAILED KITE in MD, and BLACK-TAILED GODWIT in VA.
Other birds of interest include ROSS'S GOOSE, EURASIAN WIGEON, AMERICAN BITTERN, WHITE IBIS, GOLDEN EAGLE, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, AMERICAN AVOCET, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, BLACK-HEADED GULL, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, COMMON RAVEN, SEDGE WREN, VEERY, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, and many migrants.
A COMMON or EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was spotted Apr 16 in North Beach Marsh, Calvert Co MD. On Apr 20, a SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was observed over North Point SP, Edgemere, MD (Baltimore Co). Continuing at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co VA, is the BLACK-TAILED GODWIT, which was seen on Apr 20.
A ROSS'S GOOSE was seen at the Crownsville Containment Ponds/WWTP, Anne Arundel Co MD, on Apr 16. Deal Island WMA (Somerset Co MD) hosted a EURASIAN WIGEON on Apr 20. Although single AMERICAN BITTERNs are fairly frequent at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co MD, seeing nine of them on Apr 16 was memorable. An immature WHITE IBIS was at Prime Hook NWR, Sussex Co DE, with dally sightings Apr 19-22.
Over Pickering Creek Audubon Center, Talbot Co MD, a single GOLDEN EAGLE was spotted on Apr 21. Although the BROAD-WINGED HAWK occurrence could mostly be described as a trickle, or maybe just a drip, on Apr 20 there was a spike of 10 seen at Fort Smallwood Hawk Watch, Anne Arundel Co MD.
On Apr 16, a single AMERICAN AVOCET was seen at Prime Hook NWR. Sharp-eyed observers picked out some LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERs: one Apr 17 & 18 at Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co DE, and four on Apr 20 at Fairmont WMA, Somerset Co MD. Skimmer Island, Ocean City, Worcester Co MD, hosted a BLACK-HEADED GULL on Apr 20.
Only a single RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD is still being seen in the reporting area: the one at Green Spring Garden Pk (Fairfax Co VA) was observed on Apr 17, 20, & 21.
COMMON RAVENs were widely seen in the coastal lowlands, especially along the Potomac R and in Fairfax Co VA.
A SEDGE WREN was spotted at Irish Grove Sanctuary, Somerset Co MD, on Apr 20. Crossbills are pretty much gone now, but a pair of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLs was seen well on Apr 22 on Woodbine Ave near Allegheny, in West Towson MD, Baltimore Co.
Spring migration has started rather suddenly. A wide variety of migrants has been seen, including shorebirds, terns, cuckoos, nightjars, hummingbirds, flycatchers, swallows, wrens, thrushes, vireos, warblers, grosbeaks, and orioles. Many of those seem to have arrived a week to 10 days early, or in greater numbers than might be expected at this time.
This week's reports have been gleaned from the DE, MD, VA, and WV list servers, and from eBird records.
The Audubon Sanctuary Shop (301-652-3606, http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/default.asp?page=511) is an excellent source for guidebooks and many other nature-related titles.
