I woke up to a nice surprise this morning. For only the second time in my 20 years here at home, I heard an Eastern Whip-poor-will sound off at 5:35AM this morning. It went on for about 15-20 seconds, moved down the hill and sang for another 5-10 seconds, and lapsed into silence. A nice start to my morning, and now I don't have to drag myself out of bed at 0 dark hundred and drive to Sugarloaf for my year Whip. The last one I heard in my yard was in June, 1997. It rudely woke me up at 3 in the morning.
Now if I could just figure out what kind of shorebirds flew over my house yesterday (any shorebird would be a yard bird)! About 30 in a fairly tight flock flying south (!); direct flight with steady, medium fast wingbeats; pointed triangular-shaped wings. That's about all I got--too fast, too far away and bad light to get anything on the bills or legs. Too big to be peeps, too small (and mostly wrong county) for willets, godwits, etc. They didn't seem to fly like yellowlegs, nor did they fly like snipe. Maybe Pecs or Plovers (early?), but we'll never know!
