Subject: [MDBirding] Soldier's Delight NEA April 26
Tim's sighting of a Cerulean Warbler enticed me to go to Soldier's Delight this morning. Given recent reports of singing Whip-poor-wills I decided to get up VERY early and as I pulled up at the lookout parking lot at 4:40AM a Whip-poor-will was singing very loudly only about 50 yards away! I even managed to study it in my scope in the high beams of my car, easy to spot by the light reflecting from it's eyes. I then waited in the car until dawn, while listening to the Whip singing on and off. FYI - It actually didn't stop singing until about 5:30AM.

I hiked the trails for about six hours and tallied 67 species! Best birds include:

Whip-poor-will 1
Great-crested Flycatcher 1
White-eyed Vireo 3
Blue-headed Vireo 5
Red-breasted Nuthatch 3
House Wren 4
Winter Wren 1
Wood Thrush 1
Myrtle Warbler 40+
Pine Warbler 8
Prairie Warbler 12+
Palm Warbler (western) 4
Palm Warbler (eastern) 15
Black-and-white Warbler 4
American Redstart 1
Ovenbird 1
Common Yellowthroat 1
Baltimore Oriole 1 male
Purple Finch 5
White-winged Crossbill 1 female at lookout
Pine Siskin 1

Have fun birding!
