Subject: [MDBirding] Calvert Co. migrants - both Tanagers, 4 Vireos, 14 Warblers, etc.

Had the day off today and spent it birding Calvert Co. starting at Fishing Creek marsh in Chesapeake Beach, then heading to Calvert Cliffs SP, Battle Creek Cypress Swamp, and the Smoky Rd NRMA. The highlight was at Calvert Cliffs where I saw and heard several Summer Tanagers (at least 3 males and a female), a male Scarlet Tanager, Black-throated Blue and Black-throated Green Warblers (one each), a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, and two adult Red-headed Woodpeckers. I had great looks at singing Palm Warblers as well as Worm-eating and Hooded, which I always enjoy. I also noticed the Yellow-throated Warblers were much quieter than last week; still singing but not as much and not really coming down from the uppermost branches. I missed Yellow-throated Vireo here but had Blue-headed, Red- and White-eyed and did pick up two Yellow-throateds at the Cypress Swamp along with Prothonotary Warbler.

Also saw some interesting nesting activity (or possible nesting) such as N. Rough-winged Swallows perching in some of the little hollows on the side of the cliffs, a Gnatcatcher nest, Red-winged Blackbird nest, as well as Gnatcatchers and Pine Warblers collecting the "fluff" from Cattails for nesting material.

Smoky Rd was quiet late in the day but of note was another YT Vireo, Summer Tanager (male) and a calling Red-headed Woodpecker. Still lots of White-throated Sparrows around but otherwise felt kind of like summer!

In case anyone is wondering, the warblers were: Hooded, Common Yellowthroat, Ovenbird, Pine, Yellow-throated, Black-throated Green, Northern Parula, Prothonotary, Black-and-white, Worm-eating, Louisiana Waterthrush, Black-throated Blue, Palm, and Yellow-rumped.

Great day to be out birding,
