This morning was the annual Carroll County Bird Club field trip to the McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State Park. Many migrant birds have not arrived yet (only 7 species of warblers) but we had good views of most the ones we saw. Highlights were:
Bald Eagle 1 Pileated Woodpecker - showing off today Great Crested Flycatcher 1 Yellow-throated Vireo - a pair put on a good show Blue Jay - many migrating Gnatcatcher - many Wood Thrush - 1 heard singing Brown Thrasher 1 Ovenbird - many heard singing Louisiana Waterthrush - several Black & white Warbler - 2 heard singing Redstart - 3 singing, one adult male seen Parula - many singing Myrtle Warbler - many, some singing Yellow-throated Warbler - 1 heard only before the trip began White-throated Sparrow - many still migrating Scarlet Tanager - 1 singing male at close range
Many spring wildflowers in bloom. First trillium blooming today, Showy Orchis, and three species of dandelions were highlights.
