Top bird this week is BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* in VA.
Other birds of interest include ducks, AMERICAN BITTERN, LITTLE BLUE HERON, WHITE IBIS, COMMON GALLINULE, SANDHILL CRANE, shorebirds, LEAST TERN, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, nightjars, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, warblers, VESPER SPARROW, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, crossbills, and EVENING GROSBEAK.
The BLACK-TAILED GODWIT* was seen again at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA with the most recent report from April 28.
One GREATER SCAUP, seven SURF SCOTERS and one BLACK SCOTER were seen April 26 on the Potomac River off of Hains Point, SW DC. The EURASIAN WIGEON at the Deal Island WMA (the Riley Roberts Rd turnoff), Somerset Co, MD, was seen again on April 23. A HOODED MERGANSER with 11 ducklings was the highlight of the regular Monday morning walk at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA.
AMERICAN BITTERNS were seen in a few locations this past week including one on April 26 at the Dulles Greenway Wetlands Mitigation Project, Loudoun Co, VA. Both an AMERICAN BITTERN and a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON were found April 27 at Lake Accotink Park, Fairfax Co, VA. An AMERICAN BITTERN was also found on April 27 at the newly created Goshen Milles Wetlands, Montgomery Co, MD. A LITTLE BLUE HERON was found April 23 at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD and seen there through the 26th. Another LITTLE BLUE HERON was seen April 23 in Lyndhurst, Augusta Co, VA. A WHITE IBIS was seen April 28 at Point Lookout SP, St Mary's Co, MD.
A COMMON GALLINULE was seen April 24 and 25 in the marshy impoundments near the small parking area by the river reached by Midway Mills Ln in the James River State WMA, Nelson Co, VA. A COMMON GALLINULE was also seen April 25 and 26 at Swan Harbor Farm Park, Harford Co, MD.
Two SANDHILL CRANES flew over the Fort Smallwood Park Hawk Watch, Anne Arundel Co, MD on April 23 and 24. On April 24 a SANDHILL CRANE flew over Violette's Lock, Montgomery Co MD going northwest.
The weekly shorebird/gull survey at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on April 25 really picked up this past week with over 8000 individual shorebirds of 20 species. Over 6500 DUNLIN, 700 LEAST SANDPIPERS and 51 MARBLED GODWITS were highlights for quantity. The surveyors were also very encouraged by 28 PIPING PLOVERS on the Hook starting to court and set up their nests.
An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen April 29 from Downs Rd, Worcester Co, MD, opposite the power substation; it was among quite a few other shorebirds. Two RUDDY TURNSTONES were seen April 28 at Dyke Marsh on the mudflats near Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA.
A LEAST TERN was among the many shorebirds, gulls, and terns seen April 24 during a survey of Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD. Four LEAST TERNS were seen April 26 in the Edgewood Area of the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Harford Co, MD.
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS popped up at a few locations this past week including one flying over a field west of the Germantown Soccerplex, Boyds, Montgomery Co, MD on April 24. One was observed at the Dulles Greenway Wetlands Mitigation Project, Loudoun Co, VA on April 27 and still another on the 28th at the Huntingtown NRMA, Calvert Co, MD. One was also reported from the old golf course, Natural Bridge, Rockbridge Co, VA on April 29.
Both CHUCK-WILL'S WIDOWS and EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILLS were heard in a variety of widely scattered locations this past week.
The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD at Green Springs Garden Park, Fairfax Co, VA, was reported still visiting the feeders on Apr 25.
While many birders found fewer warblers than they had hoped for, a trip to "Warbler Road" in Botetourt Co, VA on April 24 yielded 15 different warbler species and one in Prince William Co, VA on April 27 found 19 species. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was found April 27 at Mallow Bay Park, Charles Co, MD. Four heard SWAINSON'S WARBLERS were the highlight of an April 23 walk along the Washington Ditch in the Dismal Swamp NWR in southeastern Virginia. ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were seen April 24 in the Reedy Creek area of the James River Park, Richmond, VA and in the McKeldin Area of Patapsco SP, Carroll, Co, MD. One was also seen the day before at Wilson Point Park, Baltimore, MD. And another was spotted in a yard in Huntingtown, Calvert Co, MD on April 27.
Two VESPER SPARROWS were found on April 24 along Guthrie Rd, Augusta Co, VA.
Between 30 and 50 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were found April 27 at the Paint Branch Stream Valley Park, College Park, Prince George's Co, MD.
There are still a few crossbills in our area with reports of a flock of RED CROSSBILLS at a feeder in Anne Arundel Co, MD April 27 and a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL on April 26 at Soldiers Delight Natural Area, Baltimore Co, MD. One also flew over a yard in east Columbia, Howard Co, MD on April 25.
An EVENING GROSBEAK was found April 25 at Tormentor Lake, Isle of Wight Co, VA.
