Meeting
Bringing Back the Bobwhite
Thursday, May 2, 7:30
p.m in McLean, VA

Northern Bobwhite populations experienced widespread declines in the
second half of the 20th century as their habitat diminished. Now, a network of
state agencies and conservation groups are working to return the Northern
Bobwhite to areas where their numbers have declined. Wildlife biologist Kyle
Brazil, agriculture policy coordinator for the National Bobwhite
Conservation Initiative, will talk about the Bobwhite and strategies for
expanding its grassland habitat, with special attention to efforts in Virginia.
Please join us at the Dolley
Madison Library in McLean, VA.

The program begins at 7:30. Doors
open at 7 for light refreshments. Family and friends welcome; please RSVP
to Susan Sprenke.

I am fortunate to work at the NIH Animal Center ('NIH farm') off of Elmer School Rd and Club Hollow Rd between Poolesville and Dickerson. We have around 200 acres of grassland, but only about 30 acres are being managed in a way that is suitable for grassland nesters. (This was because of a single Henslow's Sparrow that showed up a few years ago). The rest of the pastures are mowed frequently enough to endanger any ground nests. We regularly have meadowlarks and a small number of grasshopper sparrows. The pastures are also occasional stop-over points for bobolinks. I am asking for any advice on how to convince the NIH staff who manage this area (mostly veterinarians) that a way can be found to maximize the pastures' potential as nesting habitat and also meet the staff needs (which currently are to pasture a small flock of sheep).
