I thought this might be relevant to many of us, or that some would find it interesting. I saw this in Slate today. Teddy Roosevelt, an avid birder, was asked to compile a list of the birds he observed during his time in Washington. He even makes a note of which species he found to be nesting on the White House grounds.

My favorite, and one not on my DC list, is the pair of Saw-whet owls which "spent several weeks on the south portico"
