Subject: [MDBirding] not many birds but orchids at Wheaton Regional
Hi all,

We took the dogs for a late afternoon walk yesterday along the old campground loop trail at Wheaton Regional Park. It was terribly terribly quiet despite the sunny afternoon. We heard perhaps two Wood Thrushes and only one distant Ovenbird when by now there should be 5 or 6 of the latter along this walk. No Waterthrush where there has been a pair for a number of years now. No other migrants. I hope this is just a late spring...

The one bright spot was finding at least 18 blooming SHOWY ORCHIS along the trail near the stream, quite a nice display! We also met a mushroomer who was looking for morels, of which he had (by then) found just one.
