I found a dead male osprey near the tip of Hains Point at 11am today. The body was fresh and most likely from today. The right shoulder was heavily damaged, suggesting blunt force trauma from a vehicle or another moving object. The bad news is that when i turned the bird over, someone had removed the talons. I turned the bird into the NPS natural resources office and filled out a report with Park Police. I dont know which nest the male is from yet. There weren't any leg bands, but with 7 nests in the vicinity, it should not be difficult to figure it out.
I did have a great nature walk with the 5 y/o's from the British School in Dumbarton Oaks, Besides being full of all kinds of questions (bird related or not), the students had a great sense of the woods and we had a decent bird list for such an energetic group of walkers. red-bellied woodpecker american robin gray catbird american goldfinch red-shouldered hawk northern flicker wood thrush northern cardinal song sparrow black-throated blue warbler mounring dove great-crested flycatcher blue jay common grackle tufted titmouse eastern towhee carolina wren
They had British Bird guides, which i thought was hilarious.
