Another rather slow birding morning in Montgomery County today, Friday, May 3, this time at Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg. A few Scarlet Tanagers, Baltimore Orioles, Yellow-throated Vireos and Ovenbirds, and lots of Red-eyed Vireos, but not too much to quicken the blood. 1 Black-and-White, 1 Common Yellowthroat, 1 N. Parula, and 1 La. Waterthrush heard at a distance. A couple of Wild Turkeys were seen crossing under the wide power-line cut.
An exception to the general lack of great excitement was a vigorously singing KENTUCKY WARBLER in the woods toward the end of the paved road leading to the Blue Jay/Nuthatch picnic areas. This road is currently blocked off from vehicular traffic and easy to bird on foot, and the woods have extensive understory. If only there was more to see and hear! But it might be really good here in a few days, when winds push migrants from the South.
