Subject: [MDBirding] Mont Co birds this weekend
Yesterday morning I walked the local stretch of the C&O Canal (from mile 7.5-8.5). Very pleasant with most breeders now in. There was a pair of Common Merganser on the river; have always suspected them of breeding here as I've seen them before late into May but never been able to prove it. Around 5 Warbling Vireo on this stretch, singing and also calling aggresively presumably establishing territories and I saw my FOY Hummingbird. Warblers included Yellow-throated, Parula and Prothonotary. Although there were Double-crested Cormorants no sign of any nests in the once thriving colony. Only Acadian Flycatcher and Peewee to return.

This morning I birded some spots along River Rd. As others have noted it was very cold and slow. I ended up searching for field birds and found Vesper Sparrows on territory on Edwards Ferry Rd and Budd Rd.I did not find them at Westerly Rd though the fields held Horned Lark, Meadowlark and Grasshoper Sparrow.

Good birding
