LeJay Graffious of Preston County took me birding today to the trail along the Youghiogheny River at the end of Old Morgantown Road north of Friendsville. We found 55 species, including these. Many of the small birds were heard only:
Common Loon--2 gorgeous adults 99% into breeding plumage swimming very close together and thus almost certainly a mated pair. Admired at length from only 100 feet away. Common Merganser--2, maybe 4 Bald Eagle--1, 1 adult and 1 near adult Osprey--1 on the nest north of the boat landing Black Vulture--2 Blue-headed Vireo--1 Yellow-throated Vireo--1 Warbling Vireo--1 Red-eyed Vireo--3 Common Raven--1 Barn Swallow--19 House Wren--1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher--5 Wood Thrush--5 Yellow Warbler--3 Yellow-throated Warbler--2 Black-and-White Warbler--2 American Redstart--5 Cerulean Warbler--5 Common Yellowthroat--4 Hooded Warbler--2 Northern Parula--7 Louisiana Waterthrush--1 Ovenbird--1 Scarlet Tanager--3 Rose-breasted Grosbeak--2 Indigo Bunting--1 Baltimore Oriole--8
Along Old Morgantown Road west of the river:
Bobolink--2 or 3
Earlier we went to a Nature Conservancy property along Cranesville Road about a mile southeast of Cranesville Swamp. The creek that runs through it is Muddy Creek. The old road that serves as a trail was an obstacle course of downed trees and branches, necessitating some bushwacking. We only went a half-mile in or so before giving up. Not many birds, but a few highlights:
Blue-headed Vireo--2 Winter Wren--1 Golden-crowned Kinglet--1 Ovenbird--1 Black-throated Green Warbler--1 Magnolia Warbler--1 Yellow-rumped Warbler--2
