This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, May 7, at 7 AM.
Top bird this week is WHITE-FACED IBIS in MD.

Other birds of interest include RED-THROATED LOON, GLOSSY IBIS,
ANHINGA, BLACK RAIL, shorebirds, PARASITIC JAEGER, EASTERN
WHIP-POOR-WILL, warblers, VESPER SPARROW, NELSON'S SPARROW,
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL and PINE SISKIN.

A WHITE-FACED IBIS was seen at Truitt's Landing, Worcester Co, MD on
May 4.

A late and somewhat-out-of-place RED-THROATED LOON was observed in the
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and from Kenilworth Park, Washington, DC on
May 5 and 6.

GLOSSY IBIS were found in a few uncommon locales. Two were at
Pennyfield Lock, C&O Canal, Montgomery Co, MD on Apr 30 and May 2.
Another was on Huntmaster Rd, Montgomery Co on May 1 and one was seen
at Lilypons, Frederick Co, MD on May 2 and 3.

An ANHINGA was seen in York Co, VA on May 4.

A BLACK RAIL was heard at Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co, DE on May 2.

Shorebird migration is well underway. The weekly shorebird/gull survey
at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA found 14,500 individuals in 19
species on May 2 including WESTERN SANDPIPER, a very uncommon spring
migrant in our area. AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen at Bombay Hook
NWR. A WILSON'S PLOVER was found on Metompkin Island, Accomack Co, VA
on Apr 30. The first RED KNOTS were spotted at Slaughter Beach from
the Dupont Nature Center, Sussex/Kent Co, DE. Two RED PHALAROPES in
Mill Creek Lake, Amherst Co, VA on May 6 were far from their usual
places.

Two PARASITIC JAEGERS were seen from the beach at Tom's Cove Visitor
Center, Chincoteague NWR on May 4.

An EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILL was heard from the intersection of Hunting
Quarter and River Rds, Montgomery Co, MD on May 6.

Reports on the songbird migration have been muted. A good spot for
warblers this week was Susquehanna SP, Cecil and Harford Cos, MD where
17 species were seen on May 3 and 15 species on May 4 including
CERULEAN and KENTUCKY. Also notable were 13 species found at the Blue
Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship, Loudoun Co, VA on May 3.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was at Monticello Park, Alexandria, VA on
May 1.

Two VESPER SPARROWS were found on Edwards Ferry and Budd Rds,
Montgomery Co, MD on May 4. NELSON'S SPARROW was spotted at Truitt's
Landing on May 5.

A single WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL visited a feeder in Salisbury, MD on
May 2. PINE SISKINS were reported from many feeders across the region.

DE, MD, VA, and WV list servers, and from eBird data.
