I had a little time to bird Lake Artemesia this evening and was surprised to find a Sora standing on the shoreline, in the SW corner of the lake. I first saw it from a good distance and wasn't even sure it was a bird. When it finally moved a little, I could see a little yellow bill and a black circle moving in unison - then I knew I was staring at a Sora head on. I got closer and snapped this photo with my cell phone and binoculars: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35144142@N04/8721048441/
This is my first Sora in the county north of Upper Marlboro. Like others have reported, today was fairly birdy, despite the rain. There was an appreciable influx of Common Yellowthroats. Also, Yellow-breasted Chat, American Redstart, Black-throated Blue and Blue-winged Warblers were first arrivals for me.
