> Hi Everybody: >
I led a trip to Washington County for the Montgomery County Bird Club yesterday. There were 6 participants. We lucked out with the weather and only had to deal with afternoon showers while we were on Broadfording Rd. looking for field birds. My usual route spends most of the morning in Indian Springs WMA and some adjacent areas, then slowly working our way across Broadfording Rd. and then looking for shorebirds, mostly around the Hagersburg area.
Kathy Calvert was nice enough to keep the e-bird lists for the trip and will be entering them soon. Below are some of the highlights for the day.
35 Bobolinks on Mercerburg Rd that were chattering vociferously the entire 20 minutes we observed them.
Blairs Valley Road & Lake area...1 Blue-winged Warbler, Osprey, Bald Eagle and great looks at an adult Swamp Sparrow...migrants were scarce here.
Hanging Rock Rd...Black-throated Blue Warbler, Black and White Warbler, American Redstart, Scarlet Tanager, Worm-eating Warbler
Mummert Rd...Kentucky and Hooded Warblers, N. Waterthrush, Black-billed Cuckoo
Indian Springs Fishing Pond area...Blue-winged Warbler
Kuhn's Ridge Rd...Pine and Prairie Warblers
Gallilee Rd...Blackburian Warbler
Park Head Rd...great looks at both Orioles and Prairie Warbler
Broadfording Rd...Numerous Grasshopper Sparrows and Eastern Meadowlarks, Northern Harrier, Least and Solitary Sandpipers, and a Lesser Yellowlegs
Sedgwick Way in pond behind Pool House...1 Greater Yellowlegs
Behind the Hagerstown Airport...Killdeer, Least and Solitary and Spotted Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs and Wilson's Snipe
For the day we had 90+ species. Thanks to all who attended and making for a very enjoyable trip.
On the way home three of us were able to see the cooperative Red Phalarope (GREAT FIND!) at Lily Ponds and then ended the day with a flyover adult Yellow-crowned Night Heron.
