Subject: [MDBirding] New DC Birding Site - this Sat.
Hi Everyone,

Do you ever get bored birding the same old sites? Are you up for broadening your Biding horizons? FortDuPontis one of the best birding sites in DC and has a great mix of mature, tall Oak-Poplar forest and lower secondary forest. The Park is only birded by a dedicated few, but has already tallied 130 species. Some of the upland Oak forest is incredibly high quality and seems to have far less deer damage than Rock Creek Park. Most of the trails are pretty level, but a few spots are a little up and down. This is also one of the best places in DC to find Wild Turkey and has recorded 27 warbler species to date. It is understandable that there are concerns about safety, but over the last 3 years I've birded the park I've never felt threatened, and nor have teams of bird banders working there.

So feel free to join me for about 2 hours at FortDuPontPark,7:30 am, Saturday, May 11th. We'll meet at the parking lot off Ft. Dupont Drive SE, near Minnesota Ave, SE..

Directions: It is easiest to get to the Park by taking Pennsylvania Ave. Se and turning on to Minnesota Ave. When you come to the Randle traffic circle, go around it until you come to Ft. Dupont Drive. About a block up the road you'll see the parking lot on your left. Here is a link to a map that highlights in red exactly were we will meet:http://forums.mtbr.com/virginia-wv-maryland-dc-delaware/wash-dc-fort-dupont-group-ride-sun-jan-27-a-833988.html If you get there late and the group has already left, we'll be birding the paved trail going east below the parking area.

Good Birding!
