I went to corner of River and Hunting Quarter Rds this evening around 7:50 hoping I might hear Whip-poor Will reported there by Don Simonson on 5/6. No luck by 8:20 pm so I drove down Hunting Quarter to middle parking lot and listened for a bit from there. Zilch at that spot to. Driving back Hunting Quarter Rd to River, stopped short to avoid hitting a snake. My dog Lucy and I got out of the car to take a look at the snake in the headlights but I quickly put her back in car when I saw it was a Copperhead. A beautiful creature but quite ornery. Would not move off the road. Struck towards me a few times when I was about 6-7 feet out. Had to find a long stick to gently lift it off the road and put him to the side. Very cool!
Prior to listening for Whip, searched around intersection of Montevideo and Sugarland Rds for Bobolinks. Nothing. An Eastern Meadowlark sang from telephone wire and few Grasshopper Sparrows were singing from grassy fields. Not enough rain yet to reinvigorate the shorebird puddle just north of the intersection.
