Subject: [MDBirding] Cerulean Warbler - Rock Creek Park
While co-leading a Smithsonian Migratory Bird Club walk at Rock Creek Park this morning, we heard a CERULEAN WARBLER in with a mixed flock just north and northwest of the Ridge on the ridge trail. We were unable to spot it, but a few of us with experience with this species in breeding areas were in agreement on the ID. Following typical behavior, it was sticking to the treetops. I never ran into the group of "regular" birders to alert them of the bird's presence.

After some other responsibilities at the Bird Festival at the Nature Center, I returned to this spot around 11 AM, and the flock seemed to have grown and were still extremely active and ear-ringingly loud. The Cerulean was singing in the same place, and there was also a nice TENNESSEE WARBLER emphatically singing (he once descended to eye level and sang in the open inside the forest), and all 4 expected brown thrushes were also in the area, including a cooperative GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH.

Otherwise we saw many of the same species as reported over the last few days. The area with the Cerulean may continue to be a big draw, as there appears to be some major defoliation event going on in the tree tops (where the birds were focusing their foraging).
