Hi DC birders,
One of the best kept shorebird hotspots in DC are the puddles that form in the huge parking lot just east of RFK stadium. This morning I was reminded that shorebird migration is hot and heavy even if everyone is looking for warblers in our forests (Least, Semipalmated, and Spotted Sandpipers along with Semiplamated Plovers).
Tomorrow I will be trying for breeding Cerulean Warblers at Thompson Wildlife Mgt Area in VA, but I as wondering if any of our intrepid DC birds could check these puddles (at high tide). Looks like any time between 10:30 and noon would be the most productive as shorebirds are pushed off mudflats and go looking for other areas to rest (like RFK)!
Inpreviousyears shorebird highlights included Sanderling, Pectoral Sandpiper, Western Sandpiper, etc. The best way to get there is to enter as if you're going to the Kingman Islandentrance, and then drive south with the bike path on your left while you check all the puddles in the area. If you do it by car, it can be done in 15-20 minutes, and about 30+ min on foot.
With this crazy weather, who knows what will be knocked down!
Thanks!
