Yesterday I waited for the morning rains to move out before I headed out on the Valley Trail in Rock Creek Park. I started right around 11 and walked north about 2 miles from the trailhead at Park Rd. It was without a doubt one of the best birding days I've ever had in DC. Almost all of the warblers were seen AND heard. The numbers were fantastic. The birds were swarming so much, once I even nearly stepped on a Yellow-rump. I got tons of FOY birds, as well as several DC-firsts.
Northern Parula 3 American Redstart 1 Black-and-White Warbler 2 Bay-breasted Warbler 1 Blackburnian Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler 15 (undoubtedly a low count, as I kept getting distracted by other species) Black-throated Blue Warbler 12 (singing and flitting everywhere, esp in the laurels) Blackpoll Warbler 9 Chestnut-sided Warbler 2 Ovenbird 5 Hooded Warbler 1 Canada Warbler 1 Worm-eating Warbler 1 Cerulean Warbler 1 Cape May Warbler 2 Louisiana Waterthrush 2 Magnolia Warbler 2 Black-throated Green Warbler 7
Other good/interesting birds...
Warbling Vireo 1 Swainson's Thrush 6 Scarlet Tanager 6 Wood Thrush 10 Baltimore Oriole 1 Eastern Wood-Pewee 3 Great Crested Flycatcher 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Acadian Flycatcher 2 Veery 3
Definitely was a great time, with some great photo opps.
