Subject: [MDBirding] Yellow Warblers & Waders - DC
Hi Everyone,

This morning we had out first singing Yellow Warbler of the spring on the block. What is odd, is that we live in very urban Columbia Heights in DC, but every year we have Yellow Warblers in our little pocket park. I think they have a particular affinity to bugs associated with mature Locust trees, becausewithout failure, we have them every single year here! Anyone else notice this connection between Yellows and Locust Trees?

Also... down the street at McMilan Reservoir we had a number of Egrets Herons Flying north overhead early (7 am) this morning. A tight flock of 6 Great Blue Herons and another tight flock of Cattle Egrets. Now, I'm veryfamiliarwith the flocking behavior of Cattle egrets, but it seems odd to have so many Great Blue Herons moving in flocks like this - any thoughts?

By the way, here's the eBird list:

Canada Goose 4
Mallard 4
Common Loon 2
Great Blue Heron 6 flying high northbound in a tight flock!
Cattle Egret 7 tight, low-flying flock going east over the Reservoir (coming from???) Smallish egrets, yellow bills, black, extended legs, compact bodies with rounded wings.
Spotted Sandpiper 1
Chimney Swift 20 large flock flying over reservoir for early morning drinks of water
Downy Woodpecker 1 in tall cedar
American Robin 2
Gray Catbird 2
European Starling 5
Common Yellowthroat 1 singing male in scrub by road
Northern Cardinal 2
House Sparrow 3

Good birding!

Jason
