Hi Chris,
Others may have already responded, but here are some details that I remember:
From Bethesda, find your way to GPS coordinates: 38.953642,-78.026997. This is an unpaved parking lot on the right driving north from Freezeland Rd. There is a sign that says Trillium Trail Parking lot or something like that. Off to the left of this sign is a very wide walking trail -- wide enough to drive on but it is gated. You should hear and see a variety of birds within the first 300 feet, and there were Ceruleans all along this wide trail. Easy to hear, more difficult to see.
In my experience, the easiest way to do the loop(approx 1.5 miles) without getting lost, is to start down the wide trail and take the first right which is a narrow footpath. This trail has trees that are marked with light blue paint. Within 1/4 mile, you will reach a junction where you can take a foot path to the left, marked with white paint. This junction had several Ceruleans and other warblers such as Ovenbird and Black-throated Blue. Also Broad-winged Hawk, Scarlet Tanagers, Wood Thrushes everywhere. Take the foot path to the left, marked with trees with white paint. Within about 2/10 mile, you will connect with the wide trail. This is the Appalachian Trail. Within about another 2/10 of a mile, follow the wide trail left, reversing your direction and continuing uphill. Remain on the wide path until you have returned to the Trillium Trail parking lot.
The entire area was alive with birds when I visited in early May, and I saw six Ceruleans well, and heard about four others.
Good Luck,
David Flynt
