Birds in the trees were what I expected today, but some of the waterfowl were quite unusual for May 18th:
a pair of bufflehead on the river above the ford a male ring-necked duck on the river above the ford a mature horned grebe diving in the C&O canal downstream of the intake at Violettes (could this be the same one that stayed until mid-June last year)
Scarlet but no summer tanagers at Blockhouse Pt. Spotted sandpipers continue to be abundant.
