Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from May 21, 2013

This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island. The summary of bird
observations that follows was taken by permission from the U. S. Army Corps
of Engineers and MD Port Administration, May 2013, Fauna Monitoring Report
for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.

After cool northwest wind for several days last week a south breeze
commenced Sunday evening providing a nice tailwind for transients. Most
notable during 20-22 May is the influx of shorebirds timed to peak at this
latitude during the full moon on the 25th just 72 hours away. Indeed the
census tallied over 9000 shorebirds (3 times as many as 12 days ago) while a
cold front from northerly directions Thursday will cease the birds movement
north. Other highlights include high counts of nesting Cattle Egret, Glossy
Ibis, Osprey, Purple Martin, and Seaside Sparrow. Additionally, Ring-necked
Duck, Red-tailed Hawk, American Avocet, and four species of rails are
unusual.
