Time and horseshoe harvesters have been very cruel to Red Knots. In May 1977 on Fisherman's Island along the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, I witnessed the spectacle of a flock of Red Knot we estimated as containing 10-12 thousand birds. All knots.

I was there on Tuesday as well (Bombay hook, Port Mahon, Pickering Beach, etc.) and saw maybe a dozen red knot total. I did see hundreds if not thousands of ruddy turnstone. Not that I mind turnstones, I was just hoping to see the well-publicized red knot spectacle.
