Subject: [MDBirding] Henslow's still in Howard
Hi --

A number of birders were out this morning at the field on the south side of Jennings Chapel Rd, hoping to hear (and possibly see) the Henslow's Sparrow reported earlier. Barry and I walked in from the hunter parking lot and were viewing the field from the edge; several other Howard Co. birders were watching from the roadside, at least one person had been there since before 7 AM with no luck.

At about 8:45 we heard the bird call its little "ts-lik" note, and for about 3-4 minutes (perhaps a bit longer) it called regularly -- I heard it maybe 10 times at most -- and it then fell silent. Everyone else left, Barry and I hung on for about another 30 minutes with no more sound from the bird. It never showed.

A warning if you hay fever - the wind blowing over the grass was raising clouds of pollen, it looked like smoke at times!

We stopped by Brighton Dam on the way home and enjoyed close views of up to 20 Cliff Swallows as they fed over the lake and perched briefly on the edge of the water.
